William Wallace Overton was born on 22 April 1880 at Whitestone, Queens, New York, the son of Winfield Overton and Maiah Overton.

Second Lieutnenat, 4th United States Cavalry, 2 February 1901
Transferred to the 15th United States Cavalry, 16 August 1902
He was promoted through the ranks to Colonel. He died on 12 July 1966 and was buried with full military honors in Section 2 of Arlington National Cemetery. He is buried in the same gravesite as his brother, Winfield Scott Overton, Major, United States Army.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
