Wiley Stuart Neal was born on 6 July 1894, the son of John Allen Neal and Mary Kirk Neal, of Ashberrys, Freestone Valley,Tazewell County,Virginia.
During World War I, he served as a PrivateFirst Class, Company I, 318th Infantry, 80th Infantry Division. He was killed by an artillery shell in the Argonne Forest, near Buzancy, France, on November 4, 1918, just seven days before the Armistice that ended the war went into effect.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
