William Richard Dear (1883-1956)
Born on December 7, 1883 in Hamilton, Virginia.
M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1906. Commissioned in the Medical Corps in 1908. Graduated from the Army Medical School in 1909. Professor of Military Science and Tactics at the University of Pennsylvania 1926-1932.
Brigadier General in April 1941. Commanding General of Medical Replacement Training Center, Camp Pickett April 1941-October 1943. Commanding General of Northington General Hospital, Tuscaloosa October 1943-April 1946.
Retired in August 1946. Decorations included the Legion of Merit.
Died on September 7, 1956.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
