Civil War Union Soldier. He enlisted at Canandaigua, New York, to serve three years in the Union Army, and was mustered in as a Private in Company C, 76th New York Volunteer Infantry on August 25, 1863.
He was wounded in action on May 5, 1864, at the Wilderness, Virginia, and died of his wounds on May 13, 1864, while a patient at Lincoln Hospital in Washington, D.C. He was buried the same day at Arlington, making him the first draftee ever interred there.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army.
