Rear Admiral Walter F. Welham, 94, of King’s Grant Retirement Community, Martinsville, Virginia, died Sunday March 24, 2002, at King’s Grant.
He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on December 6, 1907, to Malcolm S. Welham and Margaret Harkins Welham, both deceased. He also was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Anne Butts Welham.
He served in military medicine for 35 years, spanning two wars and the Vietnam conflict. After leaving the military, he served as executive director of the Association of Military Surgeons of the U.S. for 14 years.
Surviving are two daughters, Margaret Altman of Maitland, Florida, and Anne C. Welham of Towson, Maryland; two sons, Commander Walter Welham Jr. of Annandale and Captain Richard Welham of Martinsville; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be 1 p.m. on May 29 at Fort Myer Chapel in Arlington. Burial to follow in Arlington National Cemetery.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
