“Army General Sylvan E. “Salty” Salter died March 14, 1993 of cancer at his home in Homestead, Florida. A resident of McLean, Virginia in 1961-65 and 1967-81, he was Director of the Army Air Defense Missile Research Center at the Pentagon in the 1970s.
A 1945 graduate of West Point, he later worked as Director of Facilities and Engineering at the National Cathedral for seven years after retiring from the Army in 1981. He and his wife of 47 years, Jane, moved to Homestead. There they served on various civic and public boards and pursued interests in orchids and bromeliads. He is survived by his wife, a son and four grandchildren.”
He is buried in Section 11 of Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
