Solomon E. Homan was born 9 May 1831 at Lancaster, Ohio. During the Civil War he served as Captain, 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He died on 20 May 1902 at Washington, D.C. and was buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery.
During the 1880 United States Census the Captain resided at Berne, Fairfield County, Ohio. Residing with him were his wife, Harriet, age 39 and born in Ohio; and his daughter, Gracie Homan, age 10, and born in Ohio.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
