Sylvester DeWitt Downs (1889-1957). Born on February 28, 1889 in Greenville, Pennsylvania. Commissioned in the Cavalry from West Point in 1914. Transferred to the Field Artillery in 1917. With the Punitive Expedition into Mexico 1916-1917. Served in the U.S. training field artillery units during World War I. Instructor at Field Artillery School 1923-1926. Graduated from Command and General Staff School in 1927. Instructor with the New York National Guard 1932-1935. Returned to Command and General Staff School as instructor 1935-1939. Served in Alaska 1940-1944, including command of Fort Richardson 1943-1944. Brigadier General in March 1943. Reverted to Colonel in September 1944. Deputy Chief of Staff of IX Corps 1945-1945. Retired in November 1946. Died on April 20, 1957.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
