He progressed through the ranks to Brigadier General and retired as disabled in 1937. He was the author of the West Point Alumni song. He died on 19 September 1969 and was buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery.
Reynolds Johnston Burt was born in Omaha, Nebraska on 2 August 1874, the son of Andrew Sheridan Burt, Brigadier General, United States Army. He married Lillian Elizabeth Stewart on 22 September 1896 in Nebraska. His son, Reynolds Johnston Burt, Jr., Brigadier General, United States Army, is also buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
