Killed in action on August 19, 1946, when the unarmed C-47 plane on which he was assigned was shot down by Yugoslav fighter planes.
Since none of the remains of the crew were individually identifiable, the crew, consisting of Claeys, Glen H. Freestone, Harold F. Schreiber, Matthew A. Comko and Chester L. Lower, were buried in a common grave in Section 2 of Arlington National Cemetery.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
