LIEUTENANT COLONEL R. E. L. SPENCE
Retired Officer Was Winner of Citation in Cuba in 1898
WASHINGTON, December 1, 1934 – The War Department was notified today of the death of Lieutenant Colonel Robert E. L. Spence, retired, in Albany, Georgia, yesterday. He was 66 years old. He won a Silver Star Citation for gallantry in action at El Caney, Cuba, on July 1, 1898.
Colonel Spence was born at Camilla, Georgia, on July 27, 1868 and was graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1893, being commissioned in the Infantry. During the Spanish-American War he was Major and later Lieutenant Colonel of the Third Georgia Infantry. In the World War he was a Lieutenant Colonel. He retired on May 12, 1920.
He is survived by a brother, W. C. Spence of Albany. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
