NORFOLK, Virginia — Robert Edward Kelly Sr., 78, of Norfolk and Winchester, Tennessee, died Saturday, February 16, 2002, in a local hospital.
He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvnia. Kelly retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Major; he flew 35 combat missions over Germany as a B-17 navigator.
After his service career, he worked as an engineer for NASA at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Norfolk. Major Kelly earlier contributed to the formation of Our Lady Queen of the Universe parish in Huntsville and to the development of two parochial schools in the area.
Survivors include his wife, Dr. Jane H. Kelly; a daughter, Micheline K. Johnson of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee; a son, Dr. Robert E. Kelly Jr. of Norfolk; two brothers, Andrew P. Kelly of Spokane, Washington, and John P. Kelly of Loveland, Colorado; and six grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church by Father Salvador Anonuevo. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at 11 a.m. March 14, 2002. Memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
