Captain Robert E. Hawthorne, 79, died March 10, 2001, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1972, retiring as Captain.
Captain Hawthorne was born August 3, 1921, in Philadelphia, to William G. and Genette (Hemenway) Hawthorne, who are deceased. He was married January 11, 1943, to Dorothy Garland.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Robert E. Jr.; two daughters, Garland H. Johnson and Hillery H. Graham; a sister, Cornelia H. Maytag; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, William G.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Chapel of Our Saviour, 8 Fourth St. A private inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Swan Law Funeral Directors, 501 N. Cascade Ave., 471-9900, is handling arrangements.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
