Michael John Scanlon attended Monson Academy in Monson, Massachusetts. After graduation in 1965, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and went to Parris Island for boot camp (platoon 235 August 1965 graduation). He received jungle operation training at Fort Gulick, Canal Zone, in March 1966.
In Vietnam, Mike served with the 3d FORCE RECON, and was killed in action January 18th, 1967 in Quang Tri. He was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
