GOVERNOR TRENCH OF THE VIRGIN ISLES DIES IN U.S. VISIT
WORCESTER, Massachusetts, January 6, 1927 – Captain Martin E. Trench, USN, aged 57, Governor of the Virgin Islands, died suddenly at noon today in the home of his brother-in-law, Captain Ralph Earle, USN, President of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Captain Trench came here to spend the holidays. He suffered from a cold January 1 and was confined to the house, but his sickness was not considered serious until yesterday, when broncho-pneumonia set in.
With him at the end were his wife and their son, Martin E. Trench, Jr.
Captain and Mrs. Trench had only recently returned from the Virgin Islands. They stopped off in Washington where the Captain had a conference with President Coolidge and the House Committee on Naval Affairs.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
