Martha Muskie, 47, a former vocational rehabilitation program specialist at the Department of Education, died of lupus January 2, 2006, at her home in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
Ms. Muskie, who had also been a social worker with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, worked on issues related to women and disabilities. She worked until several years ago.
A daughter of the late Senator Edmund S. Muskie (D-Maine), she was born in Augusta, Maine, and grew up in Bethesda, Maryland. Throughout her life, she spent her summers in Maine.
She graduated from the University of Maine and in 1980 earned a master’s degree in social work from Catholic University. She lived in Gaithersburg for the past year.
Survivors include four siblings, Stephen Muskie of Harrisville, New Hampshire, Ellen Allen of Locust Hill, Virginia, Melinda Stanton of Marshfield, Massachusetts, and Edmund S. Muskie Jr. of Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Ms. Muskie, through her work with the Multiple Sclerosis Society and U.S. Department of Education, focused on a number of issues related to women and disabilities. Her graduate degree in social work specialized in disability issues with an emphasis on chronic issues.
Ms. Muskie was born in Augusta, Maine, and grew up in Bethesda, Maryland. She was the daughter of the late Senator Edmund S. Muskie and the late Jane Gray Muskie.
Throughout her life, she spent summers in Maine at China Lake and Kennebunk Beach.
Ms. Muskie lived in Gaithersburg, Maryland, in The Kentlands, where she moved following the death of her mother in December 2004.
She is survived by four siblings, Stephen Muskie of Harrisville, New Hampshire, Ellen Allen of Locust Hill, Virignia, Melinda Stanton of Marshfield, Massachusetts, and Edmund S. Muskie Jr. of Chevy Chase, Maryland. Ms. Muskie also has eight nieces and nephews.
Ms. Muskie will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery next to her parents on January 20, 2006.
