Sergeant Major Lacy McDougald, Jr., Distinguished Service Cross, passed away recently and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
Captain William C. Raposa, Navy Cross With Gold Star, reported his death and members of the Washington, D.C. Chapter announced his illness at the April 15, 2000 Founder’s Day meeting.
Sergeant Major McDougald received his Distinguished Service Cross while a member of the 5th Special Forces Group on April 5, 1970, for actions on an assault on Nui Khet Mountain in Vietnam. When under intense enemy and grenade attacks, he tossed numerous grenades into enemy bunkers and destroyed them. He enabled his company to overrun the enemy and secure the mountaintop.
He had been a member of the Legion of Valor since 1992.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
