First Lieutenant McGhee was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of the 505th Transportation Truck Company, U.S. Army.

On December 30, 1952, he was riding in a vehicle three miles north of Hwachon, North, when it hit an icy spot and went over an embankment killing him.

First Lieutenant Mc Ghee was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean War Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

Lieuenant McGhee was buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery.  His wife, Senorita L. McGhee is buried with him.  She never remaried and outlived her hero by 45 years.
