L. Dean Wallace, who served 15 years as mayor of Vienna and Town Council member, died of liver cancer at his Vienna home November 26, 2002, his 89th birthday.
Mr. Wallace retired in 1978 as a procurement and contracting officer with the Navy Department after 24 years of service.
From the 1950s into the early 1970s, he served as mayor and Town Council member in Vienna and was instrumental in the desegregation of Vienna’s parks and playgrounds and in the enactment of open housing legislation. On his watch, semiweekly trash pickups began and construction started on a new Town Hall.
He was born in Melbourne, Iowa, and graduated from the University of Iowa. He received a master’s degree in history and mathematics and did further postgraduate study toward a doctorate. During World War II and the Korean War, he served in the Navy. In 1965, he retired from the Naval Reserve as a Commander.
He taught at the University of Dubuque. He settled in the Washington area during the Korean War and in 1954 began his civilian Navy career with the Naval Sea Systems Command.
Mr. Wallace was a founder of the Vienna Pigtail/Ponytail girls softball league, a former chairman of the Virginia Municipal League Committee, a founder of Fairfax Hospital, a charter member of Wolf Trap Associates, a Mason and a former chairman of the board of directors of the Bank of Vienna.
He was a trustee, usher, adult Sunday school teacher and a leader of hymn singing at Vienna Presbyterian Church.
His wife of 58 years, Juanita Magana Wallace, died in 1999.
Survivors include two daughters, Tobi Wallace Whiteside of Vienna and Andrea Dean Wallace of Falls Church; a brother; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Memorial services will be held at the Vienna Presbyterian Church, corner of Park and Church Streets, Vienna, Virginia, on Saturday, December 7, at 1:30 p.m. Private interment at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers friends are requested to make donations to the Vienna Presbyterian Church in memory of L. Dean Wallace.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
