May 19, 1826-November 4, 1898. 92nd New York Volunteers. His ornate headstone in Section 1 of Arlington National Cemetery reads:
“Sacred to the memory of my dear husband.
A kind and devoted husband, an excellent patriot, citizen, and true friend to the friendless.
He did what he could.
Sleep in Jesus.
Often through the deep water I call thee to go.
The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow.
For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless and santicfy to thee thy deepest distress.”
