Jane Ryan, wife of Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Michael E. Ryan, and Suellen Lansell, chairman of the Air Force Arlington Ladies, lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arlington National Cemetery April 14. The event marks the golden anniversary of the Arlington Ladies. The Arlington Ladies are a group of volunteers who represent the Ryans at every Air Force funeral in the cemetery. The group was created 50 years ago when then Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Hoyt Vandenberg’s wife saw a funeral in 1948 for an Air Force person with no one in attendance. Since then, no one is ever buried alone.
