Born in 1832, she was a cousin of Mary Custis Lee, the wife of Robert E. Lee. She was the first wife of John Henry Upshur (Nottingham) and the mother of Custis Clark Upshur.
She died on August 22, 1864. She was buried elsewhere and eventually moved to Section 3 of Arlington National Cemetery where she is buried among other family members.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
