December 6, 1912 – Captain J. W. Meese, the first business manager of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, and widely known in publishing circles, died yesterday morning at the residence of his son, Horace S. Meese, 515 West 184th Street, New York City, after an illness of two years, in his seventy-second year.
For fifteen years he was manager of the Pennsylvania State Printing Officer at Harrisburg, and was at one time connected with the Irving Press of this city.
Captain Meese served throughout the Civil War in the Forty-fifth Pennsylvania Infantry, enlisting as a Private. A widow and three sons survive him. He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery at Washington.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
