Joseph William Burkett was born on August 25, 1925 and joined the Armed Forces while in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
He served as an infantry officer in the United States Army. In 20 years of service, he attained the rank of Major (O4). He began a tour of duty in Vietnam on September 12, 1963.
On July 13, 1964, at the age of 38, JOSEPH WILLIAM BURKETT perished in the service of our country in South Vietnam.
Major Burkett is buried in Section 35, Grave 5058, Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
