John Spencer Bukey was born in Virginia on 1 October 1845. He died in Virginia on 19 October 1919. He married Roberta Julia Magruder in about 1869 in Virginia. During the Civil War, he served as First Lieutenant, Company D, 11th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry (Union).
He is buried in Section 3 of Arlington National Cemetery and his wife, who died in 1930, is buried with him.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
