Joseph R. Sain, Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army (Retired) died on Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at Bon Secours Hospital in Venice, Florida at the age of 84. He moved from the Washington, D.C. area to Venice, Florida where he had lived since 1989. He was preceded in death by Martha Ann Sain, mother of Thomas and Joseph Jr., and by his second wife Dorothy Sain.
Colonel Sain is survived by his sons, Thomas H. and Joseph R. Jr.; daughters-in-law, Kathy Sain and Risa Sain; and his grandchildren, Ryan, Connor, Logan, and Mallory.
Colonel Sain was a highly decorated veteran of WWII, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam. He was awarded numerous medals including the Silver Star for Gallantry, the Bronze Star for Bravery, Legion of Merit, 5 Battle Stars for Combat in Europe, and two Purple Hearts.
He served as President of The Retired Officers Association of Venice and was a member of the VFW of Venice. He will be remembered for serving our country, and for his outstanding support and guidance as a father, husband, and loving grandfather. He will be missed dearly by all those who knew him. There will be a full Military burial with Honor Guard on Monday, July 2, 2001 at 9 a.m. at Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
