John Ryan Devereux was born on December 16, 1868, at Lawrence, Kansas. He served in both the Medical Corps and the Inspector General Corps of the United States Army.
He is the father of James Patrick Sinnott Devereux.
He died on July 2, 1936 and is buried in Section 7 of Arlington National Cemetery.

Former Professor of Medicine at Georgetown Served in Army Medical Corps
WASHINGTON, July 3, 1936 – Dr. John Ryan Devereux, former Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University and a retired Army and Public Health Service physician, died yesterday after an illness of two months at his home in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Death was due to paralysis of the respiratory organs. He was 67 years old.
Dr. Devereux was born in Lawrence, Kansas. His father was a circuit judge and an uncle was the late Rev. Patrick J. Ryan, Archbishop of Philadelphia. An ancestor was an officer in the army of Louis XVI of France. Mr. Devereux was a graduate of Notre Dame University.
He received his medical education at the University of Pennsylvania. During the Spanish-American War and subsequently in the World War, Mr. Devereux served in the Medical Corps of the Army. He assisted Herbert Hoover on the administration of relief in Serbia and in 1925 organized relief work in Rumania for Pope Pius.
His widow, who was Miss Annie L. Sinnott of Philadelphia, and four daughters, survive. The funeral will be held at 9:30 o’clock Monday morning at the Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament, Chevy Chase. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery o at 11:30 o’clock Monday morning.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
