NICKENS, JONATHAN H., Private, Company A, 5th Regiment, North Carolinas Troops. Bon in Sampson County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Wake County at age 18, May 23, 1861, for the war. Wounded and captured at Williamsburg, Virginia, May 5, 1862. Hospitalized at Washington, D.C., where he died on May 20, 1862. [NCT 4:140]

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
