My father was a member of the Old Guard twice. I grew up in Georgi Hall and Idaho Hall which is now part of Arlington, I also lived at Fort McNair twice while my father was stationed with the Old Guard.
Sergeant Major Hildwine, a former member of the Old Guard is buried in Lot 66 in Arlington with my mother Catherine. He used to sit outside Idaho Hall and look up and say “Jimmy some day I will be buried there.” He was laid to rest there in 1975.
He can be found in the 1955 yearbook at the Old Guard Museuem.
I’m retired US Army and someday I too well be buried in that place I used to roam as a child.
He was a veteran of World War II, was a prisoner of war during the Battle of the Bulge, and then served in the Korean War.
I did Vietnam to keep him from going as he wanted that second star on the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. His Grandson James J. Hildwine III, will pick up where I left off.
You’re home Dad… God Bless You

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
