John Adams Appleton (1892-1966). Born in New York City on December 24, 1891. B.S. from Yale University in 1914. Employed by Locomobile Company of America and the Pennsylvania Railroad Company 1914-1917.
Commissioned in the Corps of Engineers, Officers Reserve Corps, in September 1917 and in the Transportation Corps, Regular Army in June 1918. Served in the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in France 1918-1919.
Discharged in 1919 and rejoined Pennsylvania Railroad Company until 1942.
Recalled to active duty with Army Service Forces in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations and European Theater of Operations 1943-1945. Brigadier General in November 1944. Retired in 1946. Decorations included two Legion of Merit.
Died on December 5, 1966.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
