Enlisted as a Captain on 1 October 1862. Commissioned in Company K, 143rd Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania on 1 October 1862. Prisoner of war on 5 May 1864 at Wilderness, Virginoia. Returned on 1 March 1865. Mustered out of Company K, 143rd Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania on 12 June 1865 in Hart’s Island, New York Harbor.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army.
