Howell Marion Estes was born in Georgia on 3 October 1887. He was appointed to the United States Military Academy from Tennessee. He was originally assigned to the Cavalry and later to the Field Artillery. Served on the War Department General Staff, 1932-1935; Commanding Officer, Fort Devans, Massachusetts, 1943-45. Retired on disability in 1945 as a Colonel. Received the Legion of Merit. Resided in Washington, D.C. until his death in 1969.
NOTE: Colonel Estes’ son, Howell Marion Estes, Jr., General, United States Air Force, also graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and served as the Air Force Commander in Vietnam during the war there. The General died in July 2007 and is being buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
