In 1948, he took part in the Berlin Airlift which helped that German city to survive when the Russians attempted to cut it off from the West. He was awarded Humane Actions Medal by the Air Force for his actions there.
He died in a plane crash just outside of Washington, D.C. in 1964 and was buried with full military honors in Section 37 of Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
