Born at New York City, April 11, 1853. He won the Sampson Medal and Bar, Spanish Campaign Medal, Philippine Campaign Medal, the Victory Medal and a letter of commendation from the Navy Department for services during World War I.
He died on June 11, 1920 at his home in Washington, D.C. and was buried in Section 2 of Arlington National Cemetery. His son, William F. “Bull” Halsey, is buried beside him. His wife, Anne Masters Brewster Halsey, is buried with him.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
