Harry Asher Badt (1884-1967). Born on September 22, 1884 in Tyler, Texas.
Graduated from Annapolis in 1908. Aboard the Annapolis at Vera Cruz in 1914. M.S. from Columbia in 1916. Duty aboard the Minneapolis on convoy duty in the Atlantic and the Arizona in British waters during World War I.
Instructor at Annapolis 1926-1928. Commanding Officer of the Nokomis 1928-1930. Instructor again at Annapolis 1930-1933. Graduated from the Naval War College in 1938. Commanding Officer of the Tuscaloosa 1938-1940.
Duty with the Bureau of Naval Personnel as director of enlisted personnel 1940-1942, then Director of Special Projects 1942-1946, Commodore in September 1944. Retired in April 1947.
Decorations included the Legion of Merit. Died on September 7, 1967.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
