George Lawrence Purmont, 95, Captain United States Navy, Retired, of Coronado, California, died 15 September 1998. He was the husband of the late Hope Burchard Purmont of Little Compton, Rhode Island and Fall River, Massachusetts.
He was born on 6 March 1903 in Van Wert, Ohio the son of Francis W. and Helen Pauline Purmont. Captain Purmont entered the United States Naval Academy and graduated with the class of 1925. The Navy was his career until his retirement in 1954. Upon retiring, he re-entered college to earn a Masters Degree and a Teaching Credential.
Captain Purmont often substitute taught in the San Francisco Public School System. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and golfer. He was a writer and an author who often contributed to Shipmate magazine and delighted many with his “Memoirs”. Captain Purmont maintained an active interest in Navy life. He is survived by his sons George L. Jr. and Wayland L. and his two grandsons Geoffrey L. and Anutep R. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
