Born in 1859 in Hew Hempshire, he married Gulielma (Gulie) Bostick of Allendale, Barnwell County, South Carolina in Washington, D.C. in January 1888. He served as an Ensign in the United States Navy and died on 9 January 1934. He was buried in Section 2 of Arlington National Cemetery, near his son, Thomas Starke Wilkonson, Vice Admiral, United States Navy.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
