Major Palmer was born at Grapeville, Greene County, New York, on 6 April 1869 and served as a Medical Officer in the United States Army. While he was serving in the Philippines in 1925 his son, Elbert Alonzo Palmer, Jr., Ensign, United States Navy, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, drowed off the coast of Cuba, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. The Major died on 15 May 1961 and was buried with his son in Section 4 of Arlington.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
