An Aide to General Pershing in First World War Dies at 77
ROCHESTER, New York, August 18, 1943 – Captain Elton A. Gongwer, an aide to General Pershing in the First World War, died here last night at the age of 77. Captain Gongwer, who was attached to the Ordnance Department, made his home here and in Washington, D.C. He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery on Friday.
He was attached to the Controller General’s Officer in Washington for nearly thirty years except for the war years, retiring in 1939.
