Donald Wimple Spark was killed in action on the island of Saipan on 16 June 1944. His body was returned to the United States following the war and buried in Arlington National Cemetery. His brother, Michael Melvin Spark, Colone, United States Marine Corps, was killed in action in Vietnam (the first Marine Regimental Commander to be killed in that conflict) and is buried in an adjacent gravesite in Section 12 of Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
