He served through the ranks to Colonel, United States Army. He died in Illinois on 26 December 1912 and was buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery.
He was was the father of David Sheridan Rumbough, Colonel, United States Army, and Stanley Maddox Rumbough, Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army.
