He was the first Confederate officer to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery. He was from Townville, South Carolina and was wounded in battle in Virginia on May 12, 1864 and died on May 25, 1864 at Judiciary Square Hospital in Washington, D.C. at the age of 23.
He lies in Section 16 of Arlington National Cemtery, near the Confederate Memorial.
