Born at Jamestown, New York, October 31, 1847, he was educated at the Jamestown Academy and received his M.D. degree from the University of Buffalo in 1869. He married Syria Elana Browne of Oakland, California, May 12, 1882.
He was commissioned as an Assistant Surgeon, United States Navy, April 12, 1869. He was promoted to Passed Assistant Surgeon, November 10, 1872; to Surgeon, December 6, 1879; Medical Inspector, September 25, 1895; Medical Director, November 11, 1889 and retired from the service on October 31, 1909 with the rank of Commodore. He was a member of the American Medical Association and the Spanish War Veterans.
He was the father-in-law of Arthur Gill Caffee, Lieutenant, United States Navy, who is also buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
He resided in Washington, D.C. until his death and was buried in Section 7 of Arlington National Cemetery, among other family members.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
