He was killed on August 19, 1946 when the unarmed C-47 aircraft to which he was assigned was shot down by Yugoslav fighter planes. He is buried in a common grave in Section 2 of Arlington National Cemetery with four (4) other members of the crew: Captain Glen H. Freestone, Captain Harold F. Schreiber, Captain Richard H. Claeys and Corporal Matthew Comko.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
