Born in Indiana, September 30, 1858. Graduated from West Point in June 1883. Served throughout the Cuban Campaign during the Spanish-American War and particularly in the battles of El Caney and Santiago.
Transfered to the Philippines where he was killed in action on September 15, 1899 at Bancoup, Philippines. Buried in Section 1 of Arlington National Cemetery where his stone is enscribed:
“Gentle, Brave and True of Heart.”
“Her children arise up and call her blessed.”
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
