LIEUTENANT CHARLES G. GORDON
First Lieutenant Charles G. Gordon was a soldier who rose from the ranks to the position of an officer in the Regular Army. He was born in North Carolina, but removed to California when quite young, and enlisted as a Corporal in the Second California Cavalry September 14, 1861. He was reduced to the ranks in 1862, and received his discharge from the California Regiment April 25, 1864. He was made Second Lieutenant in the Regular Army September 25, 1867, receiving his commission October 3. He was attached to the Sixth Cavalry and soon proved himself an able and efficient officer. On February 21, 1870, he was commissioned as First Lieutenant and from April 4, 1874 to September 3, 1878, he acted as Quartermaster to his regiment.
