From a contemporary press report:
Carroll Reed Sr., 74, a retired Army Major who later worked in Thailand as a civilian logistician for the Thai government, died of heart disease December 24, 2001, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Major Reed, a resident of Washington, was born in this city and graduated from Dunbar High School. He attended Howard University.
In 1945, he enlisted in the Army and was later commissioned an officer. He served in Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong and the United States. He retired in 1969.
In retirement, Major Reed served four years as a logistician in Thailand.
He was a former head usher and chairman of the deacon board at Takoma Park Baptist Church.
His marriage to Dollie Reed ended in divorce.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Erlene Reed of Washington; a son from his first marriage, Carroll Reed Jr. of Mitchellville; three stepchildren; eight brothers; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
