The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Arthur W. Olanson, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Nantillois, France, September 29, 1918.
Sergeant Olanson, with his company commander, outflanked a machine-gun nest which was holding up their advance, shot one German non-commissioned officer who tried to escape, and captured two prisoners, the other occupants fleeing, The reduction of this machine-gun nest made it possible for the flank of the battalion to advance.
