Major Mitchell graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in the same class as George S. Patton. He served in the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in World War I. His son, Carroll Mitchell, Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army, was also a career military officer and is also buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
