Andrew J. Cooper, full name James Andrew Jackson Cooper was my great grandfather. He was born in Leesburg, Virginia, on January 19, 1846. He had, possibly, two brothers who also served in Company A, 35th Battalion Virginia Cavalry – Charles W. H. Cooper and John D. Cooper.
He moved his family to Washington, DC in the late 1880’s where he eventually became President of Local 190 – carpenter’s union.
He was accidently shot an killed on October 12, 1917, while entering Camp Ordway on his way to work.

According to the United States Census of 1880 James Andrew Jackson Cooper, born 1846 in Virginia, lived in Washington, D.C. and worked as a carpenter. Residing with him were: Mary Head Cooper, wife, dressmaker, age 54 and born in Virginia; Robert Head Cooper, Son, age 26, a carpenter who was born in Virginia; James Cooper, Son, age 34, a Carpenter who was born in Virginia; Lillian Cooper, Daughter, age 22, living at home and born in Virginia.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
